Gruyere Soljest (グリュエール・ソルジェスト Guryuēru Sorujesuto?) is the king of the Soljest Kingdom and one of Levetia’s Holy Elites.
Appearance[]
He is a truly obese man, unable to move without assistance. When overexerting himself or during moments of tension, his metabolism causes him to drastically lose weight, making himself far slimmer.
Personality[]
Gruyere Soljest is a glutton, loving to eat food and taking pride in being fat. His philosophy believes that to be able to be so unhealthy is the peak of luxury as only someone like the king can do what he does. Gruyere is whimsical and a free soul, doing whatever he wants and acting in ways that often betray normal conduct, making him unpredictable and hard for even Wein himself to read.
Despite his quirks, Gruyere is a wise individual with far more insight of things than he lets on. He is painfully aware of Caldmellia's true, nastier nature and has reigned on her attempts at causing war and chaos. Unlike a significant portion of Levetia's believers he doesn't hold racist beliefs towards the Fram people, and openly scorns on the scriptures as being drags of paper. Gruyere is a firm believer of actions and of proving one's character in life, with right and wrong being for God to decide at the time of judgment.
Gruyere adheres to a philosophy of the "inner beast" that is to say the ambition that drives one's actions. He believes that every person has an inner beast of their own, and that life is about finding that beast and nurture it. For Gruyere that is battle, and he takes immense joy in finding a good opponent to face. He becomes interested on Wein, his exploits and his intelligence, being expectant of his future achievements in order to learn of Wein's true motivations.
Background[]
Gruyere Soljest is known as a wise and smart king, being able to control one of the strongest militaries in the west, and also a food connoisseur, gathering chefs from all over the world to make the best food for him. He was originally introduced during the holy festival and supported Wein to become a holy saint as well, believing Wein to be interesting. This led Gruyere finding a way to declare war on Natra in order to test fight Wein but when he lost to Wein, he happily surrendered and was content in observing Wein, and now sometimes helps Wein but at a cost.
During the next conference of the Holy Elites, Gruyere also helps Wein by arranging a meeting between him and Tigris. Though he claimed neutrality on their plan to prevent Skrei from becoming a Holy Elite[1].
Relationships[]
- Caldmellia - Fellow Holy Elite member
- Ordalasse - Fellow Holy Elite member
- Wein Salema Arbalest
Abilities[]
Contrary to his dietary habits and daily null movement, Gruyere is a physically monstrous fighter who utilizes brute strength to overwhelm his foes. His weapon of choice are large hammers he employs to mow down hordes of soldiers with heavy swings of pure power. Direct confrontation against him has proven ineffective as a result of his unparalleled strength. To make matters worse, he has been shown to be able to swing with terrifying speed, not being held back by the weight of his weapons, successfully repelling an ambush aimed at him entirely by himself as no soldier was capable of getting close.
Gruyere has been shown to be an intelligent tactician being able to devise plans on the battlefield on the spur of the moment. However, his generally combative and straightforward style makes him open to trickier maneuvers. Being such a heavy fighter himself, Gruyere was defeated when Ninym exploited an opening after he attacked, unable (and fundamentally unwilling) to evade the attack.
