Synopsis[]
Wein attends a meeting with Zenova and Sirgis in hopes to gain the latter's help with the invading Soljest army. Said army seems to have gotten the upper hand on Natra's army, but Wein seems to have a plan to get himself and his country out of this predicament.
Summary[]
Riding on a carriage, both Wein and Ninym discuss the current matters involving Delunio attacking Natra. Elsewhere, Gruyere Soljest rides on a chariot with his army in tow and receives an update on Natra's army position and numbers. At that moment, Raklum leads a small number of soldiers to ambush Gruyere's men, but he easily defeats them with one of his weapons. Switching over to Wein who is accompanied by Zenova, they hope to negotiate with Sirgis a peaceful end to the war. However, Sirgis remarks how futile any negotiations are due to the fallout of Zenova's previous meeting with him. Despite this, Zenova offers land in compensation for what Soljest offered Delunio, but this offer is flatly refused. It was part of Sirgis' plan to regain the lost land by donating it to the Levetians and in doing so he'd become a holy elite. Wein then chimes in and notes the reason why he's there and proposes the death of Gruyere.
Gruyere, who stands on the battlefield disappointed by the ambush and the Natra army taking a defensive position not too far off from his position. A report then arrives saying that the Natra army is retreating and the Soljest soldiers cheer out loud for their supposed victory. The meeting between Wein, Zenova, and Sirgis continues where Wein argues that Soljest's rise in power could prove problematic to the Natra kingdom. Again this proposal is refused by Sirgis, but he offers sanctuary to the refugees. Elated to hear that proposal, Wein accepts the offer and claims an astounding 800,000. His reason is that the Soljest forces would easily overwhelm Natra and in doing so he must consider his peoples' wellbeing. Sirgis of course protests this, but Wein claims he'll still send the refugees and Sirgis responds that military action will be held against a large number of refugees. In his rebuttal, Wein claims that the yellow cloth that was traded to his country from Natra is poisonous and would put the Delunian people in a predicament where they'd want to flee and causing the militia's hands to be tied. A domino effect would then occur where the capital city would fall due to a shortage of supplies. This would cause the neighboring countries to see how Delunio mistreats its people along with the Natra people and use it as a pretext to invade. Internally, Wein admits that his toxicity claim is a bluff and Zeno comments on how monstrous Wein is to get his way. Although Sirgis proclaims that Wein's proposal is impossible, Wein notes how he did it with Mealtars before. Just then a message arrives that the Soljest army had routed Natra's own army. Furious by this news, Sirgis demands more details be brought to him.
Meanwhile, at the Jilaat mine, the Natra army is stationed there and both Ninym and Hagal are in the camp tent. An injured Raklum reports to them that the ambush plan worked, but he failed to kill Gruyere. Ninym worries that Gruyere has become privy to the prince's plans, but Hagal dismisses that idea. In Natra, Falanya learns about information relays in modern times. Returning to Wein who internally relishes the serendipitous report is then accosted by Sirgis over the current negotiations. However, Wein continues to pressure Sirgis by offering him an antidote to the fictitious poison. Back on the battlefield, Soljest army find Natra's army at the Jilaat mine and breakthrough its 1st and 2nd lines of defense. While all hope seems to be lost, Wein arrives with Delunian reinforcements, and rather than flee, Gruyere orders his men to break through the Delunian forces. However, Gruyere is slain by Ninym who had help from Raklum and Hagal.
Time passes by and Gruyere has been held as a formal captive in Natra; Wein visits him in his room and is surprised to see how much weight he lost since the last time he saw him. Gruyere admits that he has a fast metabolism and asks for the date of his execution, on the other hand, Wein dismisses that idea, in favor of forging a friendly relationship with Soljest. Mentioning that Sirgis would be opposed to this, Wein reveals that due to the recent events Sirgis had been removed from power. Wein then offers Gruyere to sign a treaty to solidify the deal, he refuses which would lead to his execution and start a war with Levetian. To avoid this, Gruyere has Wein tell him the true nature of his "Beast" and the answer astonishes him and he happily agrees to surrender.
Eventually, Wein receives a report from Ninym about the situation involving the outcome of the recent war and the overall outcome, had left an immensely bitter taste in Wein's mouth.
